When Heroes Need Rescue:
Northern California Trauma, PTSD and Addiction Rehabs
1st Responders NorCal Trauma PTSD Treatment
“It is estimated that 30 percent of first responders develop behavioral health conditions including, but not limited to, depression and [PTSD], as compared with 20% in the general population.
In a study about suicidality, firefighters were reported to have higher attempt and ideation rates than the general population. In law enforcement, the estimates suggest between 125 and 300 police officers commit suicide every year.”
Psychiatric Times
First Responder Trauma Recognition and Treatment is Essential
Firefighters, police, EMS and other emergency services providers are seldom called on to rescue cute kittens from trees. On a daily basis, first responders see accident victims horribly injured or burned, rescue survivors crushed in crumbling buildings, fight overwhelming forest fires or pull residents from burning buildings.
Studies suggest, for example, that sleep disturbances with least 2 weeks of insomnia or hypersomnia (or both) reported – are risk factors for the later development of depression, anxiety disorders or substance abuse and addiction.
Twenty four hours a day – our nation’s first responders dedicate their lives to serving the communities in which they work. Although these professions are rewarding – they are also stressful. New Start Recovery Solutions recognizes that first responders are a critical asset in every community. We feel a responsibility to provide support and treatment to assist in creating good health and resiliency.
First responders may be called on to defuse situations ranging from domestic disputes to a hostage crisis.
For first responders, work stress takes an emotional and mental toll. And as a result, high stress profession working conditions contribute to mental health problems and SUD (substance use disorder).
• chronic stress
• physical strain
• working long hours
• lack of sleep
• PTSD

First Responders NorCal Trauma PTSD Treatment
Firefighters, police, EMS personnel and other first responders experience high stress (and high risk) and potentially traumatic situations daily. However, the stress and trauma involved does not disappear when the responders go home at night.
Conversations about mental health are often swept under the rug or never stated. High rates of first responder depression, PTSD, substance use disorder and suicide make it clear that first responder mental health needs to be addressed early and often.
Post Traumatic Stress impacts first responders of every type across the United States and around the world. Firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, and 911 dispatchers have record cases of PTSD diagnosis. Some may be afraid of losing their job if they ask for help.
When first responders receive treatment soon after health impacts from a traumatic event are noticed – months of suffering can be avoided.

Asking for Help with Trauma is a Sign of Strength
As with most exposure to extreme stressors, the elevated risk of things like anxiety, suicidal ideation, PTSD symptomology, and other issues may become more acute. Using the following example, according to research by Stanley et al, “over 50% of firefighter deaths are due to stress and extreme exhaustion.” In addition, “the suicidality of firefighters in yet another study revealed markedly greater elevated levels of posttraumatic stress from the profession, while career firefighters reported higher levels of PTSD.”
Asking for help to deal with the impacts of trauma, PTSD and/or substance abuse issues is a sign of strength.
Firefighters, police, EMS and other emergency services providers are seldom called on to rescue cute kittens from trees.
On a daily basis, first responders see accident victims horribly injured or burned, rescue survivors crushed in crumbling buildings, fight overwhelming forest fires, pull residents from burning buildings.
Or they may be called on to defuse situations ranging from domestic disputes to a hostage crisis.
For first responders, work stress takes an emotional and mental toll. Their job stress often includes:
• Not being able to save everyone;
• The extent of serious injuries at an accident scene;
• Not being successful in defusing a dispute resulting in injury
Taking care of mental health is as important as managing physical health. Although in many cases – there may still be a stigma attached to seeking help.
However, the sooner emergency personnel receive treatment after a traumatic event health impacts are noticed – the better the outcome.
There is no need to ‘suffer in silence’ for months before seeking (and receiving) help and treatment.
